The first three months are a blur of feeds, naps, and outfit changes — often several times a day. Rather than overbuying, it helps to know exactly what a newborn actually needs, and in what quantities.
The essentials checklist
- 6–8 rompers or onesies — the single most-used item; budget for at least one change per day, often more.
- 4–5 sets of soft cotton sleepwear — breathable and easy to layer or remove as the room temperature shifts.
- 2–3 swaddles or soft blankets — for wrapping, tummy time, or covering the car seat.
- 2–3 caps — newborns lose heat quickly through the head, especially in air-conditioned rooms.
- 4–5 pairs of mittens and booties — prevents scratching and keeps tiny feet warm.
- 2 going-out outfits — for doctor visits or family gatherings, slightly dressier but still soft cotton.
Buying tips
- Prioritise front-opening or envelope-neck designs — easier for nappy changes and avoid pulling anything over a newborn's head.
- Choose soft, stretchy fabric over anything structured — newborns spend most of the day lying down or being held.
- Buy across two sizes (0–3 and 3–6 months) — babies grow out of the smallest size faster than most parents expect, sometimes within 4–6 weeks.
- Skip anything with buttons, bows, or embellishments near the face or neck for very young infants, for safety.
A note on quantity: it's tempting to buy in bulk before the baby arrives, but growth spurts are unpredictable — many parents find it easier to buy a smaller starter set, then top up once they know their baby's actual growth pace.
